DO THE
CHARLESTON...
Charleston was once the fifth-largest city in the
U.S., enjoying a national influence in commerce
and government, but is now better known as
a tourist destination that attracts visitors with
its stunning colonial era architecture, Civil War
museums and a legendary after-dark atmos-
phere. That’s all well and good, we hear you say,
but what’s it got to do with golf? As it happens,
Charleston offers first class golf holidays with so
much more than just time on the fairways.
Resorts are comfortable and they are convenient. Life
on resort is easy because there’s always someone on
hand to help. But for some groups, resorts can be
boring; there’s no shame admitting that you want to
be in the heart of the action for your golf holiday and
no reason why golf and action can’t happily
co-exist. Charleston is one of the few places that they
do this is wonderfully satisfying fashion. A sprinkling
of hotels can give you walk, stumble or taxi access
to the centre of town, its restaurants, bars and shops
but also keep you close enough for a smooth ride to
the morning’s golf.
Central Charleston and its famous Museum Mile set
the stage for the Mills House Hotel, whose character
and charm fulfil the classic Southern hospitality
experience. The onsite Barbadoes Room ranks
among South Carolina’s best restaurants, while the
guest rooms retain just the right amount of period
features to offset contemporary amenities.
Also central is the Francis Marion Hotel, named for
General Francis Marion, the “Swamp Fox” of the
American Revolution. Established in 1924, the feel of
the roaring 20s and la belle époque hasn’t really worn
off; expect immaculate period features throughout
and some glorious views from what is the highest
hotel building in Charleston’s historic district.
It would be easy to forget that golf is on offer, such is
the array of attractions in and around Charleston, but
if you take your clubs all that way, the least you can
do is take a few divots. Tranquil marshland, tradition-
al pampas grasses and mature woodland form the
backdrop for a small but hugely impressive gaggle of
Charleston courses. Among those that come highly
recommended are Dunes West and Charleston
National, plus the spectacular Patriots Point Links,
located on the fringes of Charleston Harbour.
It’s everything that a resort holiday is not, so roll your
sleeves up and get involved. You won’t regret it…
