KIAWAH
NOORDINARY ISLAND
For most of us, Kiawah Island won’t
register in the memory bank prior to
1991
when this rugged, scrubby
monster announced itself on our
television screens at that year’s Ryder
Cup, dubbed “The War on the Shore”.
We watched in the grip of terror as the
likes of Montgomerie and Calcavecchia
were reduced to wrecks by the closing
holes of Pete Dye’s Ocean Course. The
incredible drama, including Bernhard
Langer’s final hole miss, was enough
to etch Kiawah Island in our minds and
make it one of the most aspired to golf
It’s hard to know where to start with
Kiawah Island, such is the magnitude
of this storied resort. Those fortunate
enough to achieve a visit will experience
something entirely unforgettable on this
most idyllic of barrier islands, the borders
of which seem to signify entry to a special
sort of club. There’s an aura around the
place, a smell that rides the salty sea
breezes and a peaceful calm. It’s paradise
for golfers plus a whole lot more…
destinations worldwide.
More than twenty years on and with the
2012
USPGA Championship under its
belt, Kiawah is better than ever.
Accommodation comes in the shape of
the self-catered apartments and villas
or the top-ranked Sanctuary Hotel, the
ultimate beachfront partner to a golf
experience like no other.
At Kiawah, the landscape for golfers
extends far beyond the Ocean Course,
although Dye’s epic layout is ranked the
4
th best public course in the States.
Your week at Kiawah will not only place
you in the heart of a truly beautiful
coastal retreat, but allow you to play no
less than five top class courses. Build up
to The Ocean by tackling Turtle Point,
Oak Point, Osprey Point and Cougar
Point, crafted by the likes of Jack
Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tom Fazio.
The best of the best have left their mark
at Kiawah, a special resort that must be
seen to be believed.
