The Grand Strand
Already a well established beach holiday
destination for domestic travellers, the
1970
s saw the beginning of a transforma-
tion in Myrtle Beach. Local developers saw
an opportunity to make use of the local land
and balmy climate to attract golfers, so they
began building courses. And they didn’t stop
–
more than 100 are now strung along what’s
known as “The Grand Strand”, and what was
once a place to splash in the surf is now a
golfing paradise that knows no equal.
Connecting flights into Myrtle Beach or a fly-
drive via a regional airport will see you ease into
life in South Carolina’s golfing wonderland in no
time, but with so many courses and countless
hotels and resorts alongside, it can be hard to
see the wood for the trees.
Starting with a few accommodation
recommendations, we will put you in the right
place to explore the best that Myrtle Beach has
to offer.
Given its lively evening entertainment, Myrtle
Beach is popular with groups, so affordable and
comfortable apartment lodging is always sought
after.
Among the best options are the Myrtlewood
Villas, where easy access to the airport and the
main nightlife hot spots is assured, plus
spacious one, two and three-bedroom units that
tick all the right boxes.
In basing your stay at Myrtlewood you have
the best chance to play the Pines and Palmetto
Courses next door at Myrtlewood, home to the
area’s only Arthur Hills designed layout.
If onsite amenities and personal service are on
your check list, then choose one of two stand
out hotels. At Marina Inn at Grande Dunes,
wedged between Myrtle Beach and North
Myrtle Beach, fine views of the Intracoastal
Waterway are just the beginning.
Unwind into the magnificent rooms and suites
and take advantage of exclusive access to the
two sparkling courses at Grand Dunes, including
the highly rated Members Course.
Of the many advantages of the Marriott Fairfield
Inn, prime position for access to the best of the
evening focal points is just one. Comfort and
convenience are assured with this
excellent Myrtle Beach option, providing a more
budget-friendly approach to playing golf in
the area; amazing value is on offer for a week’s
accommodation and an exploration of some
terrific courses, including those at Myrtle Beach
National and the three Big Cats at Ocean Ridge
Plantation (Lion’s Paw, Tiger’s Eye and Panther’s
Run).
Off course action is as important as any other
aspect of your golf holiday, however, and Myrtle
Beach is well placed on this front too. In
addition to the traditional seafront attractions
by the boardwalk, the focal point after dark is
Broadway at the Beach, a purpose built and
pedestrianised area packed with shops,
restaurants and bars.
There’s nothing like Myrtle Beach for
complete immersion in holiday golf. Your choice
of brilliant, well-priced courses and plenty of off
course entertainment too.
