GETTING THERE
SPECIAL OF
FERS
The Salamander trilogy. No, we’re not
penning a sequel to the Larsen set
of Nordic crime thrillers, but we are
talking about an epic trio of another
sort. Our three-part drama is a journey
through Florida with an entirely more
appealing subject matter: golf, with
supporting roles from sunshine,
outstanding service and relaxation.
Three brilliant resorts should see you
settle into golf holiday heaven before
you know it.
Interstate 4 runs from Tampa on Florida’s
Gulf Coast through Orlando to meet I-95
on the Atlantic shores, and it also links
our three protagonists. In Tampa,
Innisbrook Resort is the Salamander
representative while in Orlando the
Reunion property stands among the
area’s very best. Finally, in Palm Coast
near Daytona is Hammock Beach, the
seaside edition of an impressive Grand
Golf Resorts of Florida collection.
You’ve probably seen Innisbrook on
television, you just might not know it.
The resort’s Copperhead Course is not
only regarded as one of the very best
open-to-the-public golf courses in the
U.S., it is also the annual host to the
Transitions Championship. 2012’s event
saw Luke Donald hoist the trophy in
fine style, putting on show a course that
many believe has genuine U.S. Open
credentials. Visit Innisbrook and you have
the chance to play not only the brilliant
Copperhead but also the three other
E. Lawrence Packard designed courses
onsite: Highlands North, Highlands
South and the Island Course.
The highlight of a recently completed
refit is the incredible Indaba Spa at
Innisbrook, a facility that highlights the
resort’s mighty pedigree as a complete
leisure destination.
Perhaps you’ve already been to the Gulf
Coast, or maybe the lure of the theme
parks around Orlando is too strong?
In that case, Reunion is the standout.
Where else can you play championship
courses designed by Palmer, Watson
and Nicklaus? America’s favourite golfing
sons have left in their wake the Legacy,
Independence and Tradition Courses
respectively, forming the keystones of
a magical resort that’s only around 15
minutes from the Magic Kingdom.
At Hammock Beach you will have the
ultimate seaside experience, with ample
opportunity to play on the shores of
Florida’s Atlantic Coast. This laid back
resort called on Watson and the Golden
Bear to map out two marvellous courses;
the Conservatory is the Watson
creation and arguably more gentle than
the Ocean Course at Hammock Beach,
a Signature Nicklaus Design that is up
there with the best resort tracks in the
Sunshine State.
