At the heart of any trip to Orlando,
particularly for families, is the Walt Disney
World Resort, which features four theme
parks, two water parks and a multitude of
shopping and dining areas. Added to this
are the delights of Universal Studios, Sea
World and International Drive, where the
Wet’n’Wild water park is a must, and it is
clear why so many groups, couples and
families opt for Orlando.
Cruise around the city and it’s hard to
ignore that this is also golfer’s paradise;
for every sign to a theme park or
shopping area, it seems that there is also
one for a lush Florida golf course. With
dozens upon dozens to choose from, it
can be difficult to identify the best for your
needs, but with the quantity and
concentration of courses, green fees are
reasonably priced and there’s outstanding
value for money to be enjoyed.
In accommodation terms, you have to
weigh up location and style. For resort
bases, Reunion is a fine choice, as we’ll
discover further on page 5, but another is
Rosen Shingle Creek. Located by Universal
Boulevard and within a 10-minute drive of
Orlando is the ultimate Florida holiday
destination, with endless attractions,
the world famous theme parks, an
array of fine hotels and resorts as well
as some terrific championship golf.
Direct flights operate daily with
Virgin Atlantic from London Gatwick
and Manchester to Orlando plus
seasonal flights from Glasgow.
Alternatively, there are direct flights
from LGW with British Airways.
It’s only a short drive from the
airport to many hotels, restaurants
and bars. Golf courses in the
Orlando and Kissimmee are all
within a 30 minute when staying on
or near International Drive.

the international airport, Shingle Creek
could not be easier to access. Once
onsite, you’ll be welcomed to a splendid
resort with access to its own Dave Harman
championship course plus a number of
other local Orlando gems.
Head a few more miles south west down
I-4 and you will soon reach the more
secluded but equally sumptuous Omni
Resort at Championsgate. The
towering hotel overlooks two sparkling
golf courses that owe much to the hand
of their creator, Greg Norman; the Great
White Shark has laid out two monumental
tracks that each tip the scales in excess of
7,000
yards. Everything you could ask for
is available onsite at Championsgate, with
superb dining and leisure to match.
For a more independent exploration of
Orlando’s golf, however, you may choose
to base yourself away from the resorts.
The Rosen Inn at Pointe Orlando is a fine
opening for this sort of holiday, with a
location on International Drive that means
access to the main tourist attractions is
a breeze, while your golfing options will
be almost endless. Favourites include the
likes of Stoneybrook, The Sanctuary,
Orange County National and Diamond-
back, all of which contribute to an
affordable but hugely enjoyable itinerary.
It’s the golfing capital of the Sunshine
State and it doesn’t disappoint; its courses
and endless array of activities and
attractions make Orlando a one-of-a-kind
destination for the golf traveller.
