Putting effectively into words the experience of Pebble Beach and the
Monterey courses is all but impossible, so it’s really up to you. Take Jack’s
advice, play there and savour one of golf’s greatest treats.
“
If I had only one more
round to play, I would
choose to play it at
Pebble Beach. I’ve loved
this course from the first
time I saw it. It’s possibly
the best in the world.”
-
Jack Nicklaus
Part photography mission, part golf
course, Pebble Beach is in fact a public
facility open to anyone, and is the
cornerstone of a once-in-a-lifetime golf
trip. Monterey Peninsula is a spectacu-
lar spit of craggy land that juts into the
Pacific a couple of hours south of San
Francisco where you’ll likely only have
pelicans, migrating humpback whales
and a few other golf nuts for company.
But Pebble Beach Golf Links isn’t the
only delight on the menu; The Links at
Spanish Bay is a spectacular routing
designed by Tom Watson and Robert
Trent Jones Jnr, while Spyglass Hill –
another RTJ creation mapped through
the cypress trees that are so
characteristic of the area – actually
ranks as the favourite of many Monterey
visitors.
Stay and play has never sounded so
appealing as it does here: choose from
The Inn at Spanish Bay or The Lodge at
Pebble Beach and your accommodation
will match the golf like a well tailored
suit. Expect outstanding hospitality,
sumptuous rooms and suites plus a
selection of top class eateries.
Gazing at the rocky cliffs, the golden sand and the
churning waves of Carmel Bay from the 7th or 8th
holes at Pebble Beach, it can be hard to believe
that the course was built into an existing plot of
natural terrain. In an era where
manufacturing aesthetic golfing pleasure through
the displacement and replacement of acre upon
acre of earth is the norm, Pebble Beach stands as
an example of what can be achieved with a
sympathetic eye and a seaside site.
Perched on the edge of the Monterey Peninsula,
at times appearing to cling on for dear life, Pebble
Beach sits atop many lists of lifetime golfing
aspirations, inspiring generations of golfers to make
the pilgrimage to this most dramatic of courses,
where great tournament battles have played out.
Playing Pebble Beach – the realisation so few lovers
of the game achieve – means treading the same
fairways where Tom Kite won the U.S. Open so
emotionally in 1990, where Tiger Woods enacted a
15-
stroke decimation of the field in 2000 and where
Graeme McDowell entered the history books in 2010.
