Kohler stands as a monument to the
extraordinary vision of a single man,
and an unlikely vision it is on first
glance. For this man’s background is
not in golf course design, resort devel-
opment or leisure, but in bathroom fix-
tures. Herbert Kohler Jr. inherited the
stewardship of the family business from
his father and while the company is the
most recognisable name in its field, we
think the lasting legacy of the younger
Herb will be his ardent love of golf.
It’s quite possible that you didn’t know that it was even
here, or that it was accessible. Now you do, we’re betting
it’s not long before Destination Kohler is on your radar…
It is on these shores of the great Lake
Michigan that Kohler has achieved the
realisation of a first class golfing
destination. In the space of a few short
decades, this Wisconsin town will step
from golfing backwater to fully fledged
Ryder Cup venue – the 2020 fixture is
scheduled for its incredible Whistling
Straits course. It is based on this utterly
mesmerising golfing landscape that the
Kohler mystique has grown, and is how
the resort has been catapulted atop
‘
must visit’ lists the world over.
Whistling Straits hugs tightly the edge
of Lake Michigan, which more than a
few times seems to invite the golfer in.
At times, this monumental parcel of
land appears more lunar landing site
and less championship golf course;
remarkable contrasts are achieved by
the sculpting of the terrain around
which rugged natural grasses grow
seemingly unconstrained, and by the
great sandy waste areas made famous
by Dustin Johnson’s final hole mishap in
the 2010 U.S. Open.
Ranked consistently in the top 5 of
American courses with open access to
the golfing masses, Whistling Straits is
personified by its designer, Pete Dye,
the man responsible for some of the
world’s most aesthetically impactful but
at times dizzyingly difficult courses. But
it’s by no means the only attraction at
Kohler; neighbouring Whistling Straits
and slightly inland is the Irish Course, a
tranquil test that itself ranked 35 in the
country’s best public offerings.
And with Blackworf Run, the Kohler
experience becomes yet more enticing.
Two highly rated courses, also from the
gifted pen of Mr. Dye, are the inland
antithesis to Whistling Straits, and have
an impressive resumé headed by this
year’s United States Women’s Open.
Make the pilgrimage to these
wonderful shores and you will be
welcomed in fine fashion. The Inn on
Woodlake is perfectly equipped to
meet the needs of the travelling golfer,
while The American Club is a luxury
icon that stands as the only AAA
Five-Diamond lodging in the American
Mid West, with spa and dining
amenities to match the incredible
standards that typify the property.
