Spearheaded by Open Championship heavy-
weights Turnberry and Royal Troon, Ayrshire is
not lacking in golfing muscle, but these two are
not the only highlights of Scotland’s west coast.
Strung along the shoreline and further inland are
some top class courses awaiting your discovery.

Often in the shadow cast by Fife from across the
Forth, East Lothian is a mighty golf destination
in its own right. Speckled generously with some
epic links golf such as Gullane, North Berwick
and the Glen, this corner of Scotland more than
holds its own against the Scottish heavyweights.

Prestigious national amateur tournaments grace
the links at Machrihanish year on year, underlining
the fact that this is one of Scotland’s true gems.
The Kintyre Peninsula may not be particularly
accessible, but it does lend its amazing
landscape to spectacular golf courses.

Skip across the Tay Bridge from Fife and you will
reach Dundee; the starting point for golf tours
taking in the array of courses up the Angus coast-
line. Carnoustie is, of course, the most recognis-
able of these, but is backed up by the likes of
Montrose, Monifieth, Downfield and Arbroath.

Old & Torrance Courses
(
Fairmont St Andrews *****)
from

(
low season)
This is the home of golf, what more can
you say? If you are a serious golfer and
have never played in St Andrews, then
there should be no doubt of your next
destination. The town is perfectly set up to
offer the ultimate experience for golfers,
and there is a truly unique atmosphere
throughout.
Of course, there is the Old Course, which
stands as a beacon above all courses
worldwide. It is a special experience, but
one with certain strings attached. Low
season access is straightforward, but
securing a guaranteed tee time during the
summer carries a high premium, with the
daily ballot the only other option.
St Andrews does not end with the Old,
however; we strongly advise that you play
Kingsbarns, the iconic Kyle Phillips
creation a few miles down the coast.
Kingsbarns is one of the best courses
crafted in the modern era, and one that
lives long in the memory.
Further options include the Duke’s Course
and the Castle Course, while Fairmont St
Andrews boasts two excellent and highly
accessible layouts in the Torrance and
Kittocks.
Accommodation
This is a matter of personal preference,
as St Andrews offers the full gamut of
options; at the five-star level, our recom-
mendations are Fairmont St Andrews and
the Old Course Hotel, both magnificent
resorts with the requisite facilities, while
we have a selection of less extravagant
bases in the heart of the ‘Auld Grey Toun’.
