Looking out to sea and the imposing Ailsa
Craig, the Ailsa Course at Turnberry boasts
some world-class holes. Perhaps the best
of them all is the tenth; from a remote tee
set atop a rocky cliff-top promontory, the
drive is across the corner of the bay, and of-
fers visitors a glimpse of the site of Bruce’s
Castle, home to Scotland’s 14th century
King, Robert the Bruce.
The narrow path and the tee shot itself are
not for the faint-hearted, but are typical of
Turnberry’s dramatic setting.
Ailsa Course
The Ailsa Course at Turnberry is regarded
by many as the best links course in
Scotland, and made a welcome return to
the Open Championship spotlight for Tom
Watson’s near miss in 2009.
Kintyre Course
Turnberry is fortunate enough to actually
boast two quality links courses: like the
Ailsa, the Kintyre was rescued from near
extinction by architect Mackenzie Ross in
the 1950s. At the Kintyre, fortunate visitors
will experience fast, undulating greens,
tight links turf, magnificent holes along the
shoreline and glorious views of Kintyre,
Arran and the lighthouse.
Accommodation
Turnberry offers guests the best in five-star
treatment with top-quality accommodation,
dining and leisure facilities. Various accom-
modation options will cater to any taste,
as the resort offers standard classic rooms,
suites, lodges and cottages.
The Turnberry Hotel sits proudly overlook-
ing the Isle of Arran and the Mull of Kintyre,
and has been a luxurious haven since its
opening in 1906.

FAIRMONT ST ANDREWS
ST ANDREWS, FIFE
Torrance Course
A Ryder Cup hero both as player and
Captain, Sam Torrance has created a
modern classic with a course that
challenges players with large, undulating
fairways and greens. Although not tight,
the course is protected with long,
punishing fescue rough, and cavernous
bunkers.
With its position above the bay, golfers
can expect to battle a strong prevailing
wind. The signature hole is the par-4 17th,
dubbed “Sam’s Favourite”, which hugs the
coastline and offers spectacular views back
towards St Andrews.
Kittocks Course
Bruce Devlin has used the fantastically
rugged landscape to carve out a truly
memorable championship links. Kittocks
constantly asks questions of the golfer,
challenging both bravery and skill.
The trademark hole is the 17th, where the
challenge is to attack a green perched
precariously on the cliff’s edge, guarded by
numerous devilish traps.
Accommodation
Sitting proudly above its two fabulous
golf courses and facing back towards the
famous St Andrews skyline, the hotel at
Fairmont St Andrews is a true 5* venue.
Each one of the 209 well-appointed
bedrooms ensures that its occupants relax
in comfort and style, while the facilities
throughout the hotel cater for any desire. A
top quality conference and banquet host,
the team of staff at Fairmont prides itself
on its unwavering commitment to customer
service.
THE GLENEAGLES HOTEL
AUCHTERARDER, PERTHSHIRE
King’s Course
James Braid was determined to create a
course which placed the emphasis on the
golfer’s ability to shape his shots and be
creative, which explains why Lee Trevino,
one of the most natural players to ever
play the game, said that, “If Heaven is as
good as this, I sure hope they have some
tee-times left.”
Queen’s Course
Threading through the high ridges on
the north and east side of the estate, the
Queen’s has many moorland characteris-
tics, and offers beautiful woodland settings
as the course meanders through the glen.
With indigenous lochans and streams
incorporated as water hazards, this is a
beautiful and genuine Perthshire classic.
PGA Centenary Course
Jack Nicklaus’ PGA Centenary will host the
2014
Ryder Cup Matches, and while most
agree that the Golden Bear has created a
modern classic, Jack gave the credit to the
canvas he was supplied with, saying that it
was “the finest parcel of land in the world I
have ever been given to work with.”
Accommodation
The Gleneagles Hotel is part of the
Five Red Star Resort, and has recently
celebrated its 80th anniversary. The quality
of service on offer is unrivalled, with the
hotel retaining a member of staff for each
hotel guest. The grandiose building was
designed to emulate the opulent style of a
French chateau, while the manicured gar-
dens were inspired by the celebrated 18th
century horticulturalist Capability Brown.
